More than two-thirds of Americans (68 percent) want the federal government to invest more in roads, bridges and mass transit systems, according to the results of a recent American Automobile Association survey. Only 5 percent said the federal government should spend less.
Fifty-two percent of respondents would pay higher gas taxes for better transportation infrastructure. Among those willing to pay more, 20 percent would pay up to $4.99/month more, 11 percent would pay between $5 and $5.99 more per month, and 21 percent would pay more than $10 per month more.
In the survey, 51 percent of respondents said they would be likely to vote for a member of Congress who supports increased federal spending on transportation.
