The National Association of Counties (NAC) called on Congress this week to increase the federal gas tax and to reauthorize MAP-21 for six years.

“We just don’t have those dollars,” said NAC Transportation Chairman James Healy. “We cannot do this alone.”

According to the NAC, 45 percent of public roads and 39 percent of bridges are maintained by counties.

"Counties matter in terms of this nation’s infrastructure,” said Roy Brooks, chairman of the NAC Large Urban County Caucus.
