The Senate Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittee approved a $34.2 billion bill this week to fund the Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and related agencies.
The bill contains many programs that fund engineering works.
DOE would receive $28.4 billion for its energy and security programs, which is $1.091 billion above the fiscal year 2014 level and $64 million below the President’s budget request. The bill directs DOE to develop clean energy technologies while creating U.S. jobs, modernize the nuclear deterrent, secure dangerous nuclear and radiological materials around the world, and clean up the country’s Cold War environmental legacy.
The Army Corps would get $5.1 billion for maintenance of locks and dams, ecosystem restoration, and other projects, an increase of $601 million above the budget request. The bill allocates $1.421 billion for water resources projects that provide for improvements to navigation, flood risk management, and ecosystem restoration; $2.8 billion for operation and maintenance of water resources projects; and $125 million for water resources studies.
The Bureau of Reclamation would receive $1.22 billion for operation of hydropower and water storage dams, which is $115.6 million over the fiscal year 2014 enacted amount and $187 million above the budget request.
