The House of Representatives approved this week the North American Energy Infrastructure Act to establish a clear and efficient approval process for pipelines and transmission lines that cross the borders of the United States with Canada or Mexico.
The bill mandates that permits for cross-boundary oil pipelines will be handled by the Department of State, natural gas pipelines by FERC, and electric transmission lines by the Department of Energy.
The bill requires that final project decisions must be made within 120 days of the determination of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance.
ACEC supports the legislation’s commitment to expediting the application process and protecting the environment.
On November 14, 2013, ACEC President and CEO Dave Raymond sent a letter to House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton endorsing the bill.
