Colonel Bernard Lindstrom, commander for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District, spoke to the ACEC Energy and Environment Committee at its summer meeting in Pittsburgh on the Corps' efforts to sustain the nation's inland waterways.
Susan Maley and Alexandra Hakala from the National Energy Technology Laboratory addressed challenges and opportunities in fossil fuel-based power generation and in performance evaluations of hydraulically-fractured shale systems.
Other speakers included Dennis Yablonsky of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development on energy demand and the regional impact in and around Pittsburgh; Councilman Corey O’Connor of the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority on managing the region's substantial water quality challenges; and Randy Forister of the Allegheny County Airport Authority on the development of natural gas resources at Pittsburgh International Airport which will result in $300-500 million in royalties for the airport.
“The government and business insights we learned from this week’s meeting were invaluable,” said Committee Chairman Jack Hand, CEO of POWER Engineers. “This is information ACEC and our committee Member Firms can use as we plan our approaches to energy and water."
