Crowded U.S. Ports Will Get Worse Before They Get Better: Maritime Commission to Consider Solutions

Crowding at U.S. ports in a growing problem, said U.S. DOT Maritime Administrator Paul Jaenichen.

"All of the ports in general have some kind of congestion at the gate," he said. "Many of the ports grew up around cities and local areas where the port was there first and the city sort of grew around it and now you have constrained it."

The problem will likely get worse because the U.S. population is expected to grow to 400 million by 2050 and port cargos are expected to increase by 14 billion tons annually.

The Federal Maritime Commission will meet with industry leaders in Los Angeles next week to discuss how to address the crowding.

In the most recent round TIGER grants (see related story below), $74 million was directed toward port improvements.
