In accordance with MAP-21, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is incorporating risk- and performance-based criteria in bridge inspection protocols.

Risk-based inspection policies permit bridge types that perform better to be inspected less often, freeing up resources for more frequent inspections of bridges with higher risk profiles.

MAP-21 also requires that inspectors collect element-level data on bridges. "You take a bridge and you break it into measurable quantities and pieces," said Tom Everett, team leader of the FHWA's Bridge Safety, Preservation and Management Team. "It gives us much more specific, consistent, quantified data."
