The Department of Transportation has selected 40 projects to receive a share of $3.59 billion in federal disaster funds to help public transportation systems in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy become more resilient. The funds are being allocated from the ACEC-supported Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013.

Among the recipients are the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority ($1.6 billion), New Jersey Transit ($1.3 billion), Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority ($86.7 billion) and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

"These projects are not glamorous; many of them will be invisible to most riders, but they will give a region a better chance of withstanding the kind of punishment we know Mother Nature is capable of dishing out," said DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx. "And it makes it more likely that taxpayers won't have to pay to restore the same transit services if another storm hits."
