Charlie Cook, editor and publisher of the Cook Political Report, briefed Conference attendees on the upcoming mid-term elections and took time out to recognize ACEC/PAC as “a formidable advantage for the industry in helping lawmakers become more effective when trying to accomplish things on your behalf.”
Cook detailed numerous challenges facing both parties on November 4, but saw significant gains ahead for Republicans.
“A Republican majority in both houses of Congress is a strong possibility,” he said. “While there are five to six of those critical Senate races bouncing between one and three percentage points of each other, I believe the GOP will gain at least three of those seats, and are in really good shape in at least three other races.”
Cook emphasized that whichever party takes control, the margin will be very narrow, adding to the challenge of achieving compromises on major issues, including tax reform and the budget.
